Palmer Luckey, the former CEO of Oculus—the VR company purchased by Meta that eventually became the most popular VR hardware manufacturer in the world—teased in a post on X today that he would be announcing a new VR headset project later this month at AWE. This comes as a surprise, as earlier today, Palmer announced a new project called ModRetro, a handheld GameBoy emulator that runs real cartridges. This device marks Palmer's first move back into the gaming industry since his departure from Oculus and Facebook (now Meta) and has turned heads in the industry.

VR YouTuber and reporter @SadlyItsBradly reacted to the news of ModRetro with a repost, stating, “Oh wow. Even Palmer would rather release a handheld than a VR HMD.”

Palmer responded with the statement, “I am going to be announcing the fact that I am working on a new HMD at AWE!”

Not much is known yet about this device, whether it will be gaming-related like the Meta Quest 3 or focused on “Spatial Computing” like the Apple Vision Pro. This device might not even be for the consumer market at all, potentially being developed for Luckey's defense technology company, Anduril.

The VR community is buzzing with speculation. Some enthusiasts hope that Luckey's new project will push the boundaries of VR technology even further, potentially introducing new features or capabilities that have yet to be seen in the market. Others are curious about how this new headset will compare to existing devices, considering Luckey's track record for innovation and his deep understanding of the VR landscape.

Given Luckey's history of pioneering advancements in VR, his return to the industry is highly anticipated. Many industry experts believe that whatever he unveils at AWE could set new standards and expectations for future VR hardware. His ability to surprise and innovate has been well-documented, and his latest ventures indicate that he is far from finished making his mark on the tech world.

As anticipation builds, the VR community eagerly awaits more details at AWE, hoping Palmer's new project will once again revolutionize the industry. Whether it will be a groundbreaking consumer product, a specialized tool for developers, or something entirely unexpected, Palmer Luckey's announcement is sure to be a highlight of the event.
